# Resetting Password

Tempest has two types of passwords. One for your sync account, and one for your vault.&#x20;

1. The sync account is used for isolating your user data synced online, and you can simply reset it via <https://gotempest.app/users/password/new>. It's required while signing in online.
2. The vault password is used to encrypt your data on your device before synchronization, ensuring end-to-end encryption. It is required when Tempest successfully signs in and begins syncing data or when switching to a new shared vault. This password is non-recoverable, meaning that if you forget it, all your data will be permanently lost.

#### If you have access to the vault and it's current password

You can reset your vault password on Tempest Desktop by going to:\
**Settings → Account → Change Vault Password**

#### If you don't have access to the vault or it's current password

Please contact support at <https://gotempest.app>, we can help you to reset the vault so that you can set a new password. By this way, all your data will be permanently lost
